Sanctuary: your boutique Northland retreat

The Sanctuary, a boutique Northland retreat, is located an easy 3-hour scenic drive north of Auckland, via State Highway 1 through Warkworth, Wellsford and Whangarei.

At the Kawakawa turn-off, leave Highway 1 by continuing to drive straight on towards Paihia and the Bay of Islands on SH 11.

12km on will bring you to Opua Hill.

Here, the road forks: to find us, turn left towards Paihia. A short 200m from the Opua fork, you will see The Sanctuary’s sign on the right-hand-side.

To the right from the fork will take you into Opua and to the car ferry across to Russell.

Approach from Kerikeri

If you are arriving from Kerikeri, make your way through Paihia, from there it is 4.5km to Opua. As you reach the top of Opua Hill you will see The Sanctuary @ Bay of Islands from Bay of Islands Lodge sign on the left (just after the Broadview Road turn off).

Airports

For guests who prefer to fly, there is an airport at Whangarei (1 hour south of Opua) and Kerikeri (30 minutes north of Opua). Both have services to and from Auckland by Air New Zealand. Transfers can be arranged at a nominal charge.
